A differenza di gran parte delle pubblicazioni nel campo del successo, The 7Habits of Highly Effective People (Le 7 regole per avere successo) si discosta notevolmente da tutta la letteratura motivazionale.
Esso ha preannunciato una nuova era per il genere, basandosi sulla costruzione di un nucleo di principi personali, laddove in precedenza l’enfasi era stata posta sulla manipolazione del comportamento.
Covey afferma: Ciò che decreta il successo di una persona, nel contesto professionale o famigliare, non è il complesso di facili regole applicabili con immediatezza, in modo indolore e altrettanto immediati risultati. L’approccio al cambiamento, al contrario, parte da un serio lavoro compiuto su se stessi, da uno sguardo anche impietoso, se necessario, ai propri paradigmi mentali limitanti e alle abitudini inefficaci..
Il modello de I Sette Pilastri del Successo del guru della leadership e della gestione Stephen Covey è una teoria applicabile alla nostra vita personale, sociale e lavorativa.
Le sette regole per avere successo” (o abitudini di successo, secondo una traduzione più appropriata) per Covey sono queste:
- Essere proattivi. Il termine è utilizzato nel testo come contrario a “Reattivo”. Secondo Covey le strategie Reattive (cioè quelle di puro adattamento , reazione, ai mutamenti dell’ambiente circostante) non portano lontano. La pro-attività è la capacità di controllare il proprio ambiente, piuttosto che l’opposto, come spesso accade. Le persone devono controllare il loro ambiente, usando l’autodeterminazione e la capacità di far fronte alle varie circostanze. Cambiando il paradigma bisogna imparare a creare circostanze e fatti favorevoli.
- Pensare partendo dalla fine. Gli individui che intendono operare con il massimo dell’efficienza, per ottenere successo nelle iniziative di ogni giorno devono sviluppare l’abilità di concentrare l’attenzione sul risultato desiderato e concentrarsi sulle attività che contribuiscono a raggiungere quello scopo.
- Individuare e dare precedenza alle priorità. Un individuo deve gestire la sua propria persona.
- Pensare win-win (vincere-vincere). Questa, per Covey è la funzione più importante della leadership interpersonale, perché la maggior parte dei successi sono basati su sforzi comuni. Di conseguenza lo scopo deve essere individuare sempre soluzioni win-win per tutti, superando il classico atteggiamento competitivo che si fonda sulla concezione delle scarsità delle risorse e delle opportunità. Per Covey il successo non è uno scontro in una arena finalizzato alla spartizione di poche risorse ma, un modo nuovo per creare dal nulla opportunità e benessere per tanti.
- Cercare di capire, prima di farsi capire. Le persone efficienti pantono sempre dalle esigenze di chi hanno di fronte. Sviluppando e mantenendo rapporti positivi attraverso la buona comunicazione, il manager è compreso dagli altri e può capirli.
- Imparare a lavorare in sinergia.Questa è l’abitudine della cooperazione creativa: il principio secondo il quale la collaborazione verso il raggiungimento di uno scopo permette di realizzare spesso di più di quanto potrebbe essere realizzato dagli individui che lavorano indipendentemente. Cooperazione è una chiave importante.
- Affilare la propria lama. Per Covey, dovremmo, sempre, apprendere dalle nostre esperienze precedenti. E dovremmo incoraggiare gli altri a fare lo stesso. L’autore vede lo sviluppo e l’auto-miglioramento continuo come una delle funzioni più importanti per potere far fronte alle sfide e per aspirare a livelli elevati di abilità.
Per l’autore la persona di successo, prima di tutto, deve avere carattere. Una persona di carattere rimane fedele ai propri valori, animata dal desiderio di saper ascoltare con maggiore attenzione, amare in modo incondizionato e cercare di comprendere gli altri.
Le Considerazioni di Covey ruotano attorno ad un’idea molto semplice: “Bisogna prima di tutto crescere come individui”. Prima di poter iniziare a fare, dobbiamo apprezzare e perfezionare la persona che siamo: una persona di successo corrisponde a un individuo che si assume degli impegni e li mantiene, onorando le promesse fatte; ammette i propri errori subito e apertamente; valuta il divario fra stimolo e risposta; gli capita di rado di “dover” fare qualcosa, e quando lo fa è per scelta, capisce che il tempo è prezioso e che “successo” significa semplicemente essere noi stessi ma in modo organizzato; inoltre è disposto a fare cose che gli altri non vogliono assumersi il compito di fare, pur di raggiungere un obiettivo superiore.
Covey spiega che spesso la crescita personale deriva non tanto dal fare qualcosa di nuovo, quanto dalla capacità di vedere una stessa cosa sotto una luce nuova. Abbiamo tutti delle mappe mentali del nostro mondo che, a torto, scambiamo per il territorio che ci circonda realmente. Se restiamo ancorati alle nostre vecchie mappe non riusciamo a vedere la vera configurazione del terreno e ci perdiamo.
Dobbiamo mutare i nostri paradigmi, il nostro modo basilare di vedere il mondo.
