Lean startup – si può fondare una impresa limitando i rischi?
Lanciando sul mercato il suo primo prodotto/servizio, una giovane azienda entra in una fase decisiva. Dopo mesi o addirittura anni di sviluppo, creazione di canali di vendita, garanzia di finanziamento e misure di marketing, ora arriva il momento della verità.
Il prodotto/servizio avrà successo?
Da alcuni anni ormai, alcuni fondatori si affidano alla metodologia lean startup, che promette di ridurre al minimo gli aspetti imponderabili del lancio sul mercato e, allo stesso tempo, di rendere le giovani aziende più flessibili, innovative e, in generale, di maggior successo.
LEAN STARTUP – DI COSA SI TRATTA?
Nonostante il concetto di “lean startup” circoli da diversi anni nella scena delle startup, sono ancora relativamente poche le imprese che lo hanno approcciato seriamente; di conseguenza vi sono alcuni fraintendimenti circa il suo reale significato.
Il termine “lean startup” è stato coniato dall’imprenditore Eric Ries per la prima volta nel 2008 sul suo blog. Nel 2011 ha pubblicato il libro “The Lean Startup”, che riassume l’idea e tutti gli elementi di base dell’approccio e che è stato venduto con grande successo.
Il metodo lean startup è una sintesi dei processi che aiutano a creare aziende e realizzare idee di business. Il focus è posto su un ingresso sul mercato rapido con un prototipo che mostra solo le funzioni di base e le caratteristiche dell’idea imprenditoriale, il cosiddetto MVP (Minimum Viable Product, in italiano “prodotto minimo funzionante”).
Il prodotto viene continuamente migliorato e adattato alle esigenze degli utenti sulla base dei feedback dei clienti per ottenere un prodotto più commerciabile a ogni nuova versione.
Questo ciclo di miglioramento, ripetuto più volte, è definito “Build – Measure – Learn” (“costruisci – misura – impara”).
Il ciclo di costruzione, misurazione e apprendimento porta a nuove idee, prodotti e dati.
VANTAGGI NELL’UTILIZZO DEL METODO LEAN STARTUP
Tale approccio pragmatico offre alcuni vantaggi: uno dei più importanti è che la raccolta e l’analisi dei dati riduce l’incertezza.
- Il prodotto non viene sviluppato sulla base di ipotesi, ma sulla base di analisi dei dati.
- Le idee non sostenibili sono già evidenti nelle prime fasi del processo di sviluppo.
- Il fallimento diventa meno probabile.
- La modifica multipla del prodotto può rivelare lacune di mercato non ancora scoperte in precedenza.
- Gli utenti sono direttamente coinvolti nello sviluppo del prodotto attraverso il loro feedback favorendo un aumento della loro fidelizzazione.
- Si evita di sprecare inutilmente le risorse nell’ulteriore sviluppo di funzioni eventualmente non proficue.
COSA SIGNIFICA LEAN STARTUP PER LO SVILUPPO DEL PRODOTTO /SERVIZIO?
La qualità dell’MVP è decisiva per il successo di una lean startup, poiché è la base per ulteriori indagini e test. Il prototipo si limita alla funzione centrale su cui si basa l’idea commerciale. In questo modo è possibile determinare immediatamente se, in linea di principio, esiste un mercato per il prodotto. In questa fase non dovrebbero ancora essere integrate funzioni aggiuntive che distraggono dall’idea centrale. Di conseguenza, la gamma di funzioni è ancora molto limitata al momento del lancio sul mercato, per cui è tanto più importante che la caratteristica principale funzioni senza intoppi e che sia perfettamente implementata.
Sulla base del primo MVP hanno luogo iterazioni, cioè nuove versioni di prodotto con caratteristiche adattate o ampliate in minima parte, che ampliano o modificano passo dopo passo la portata o l’orientamento del prototipo.
Sulla base delle nuove conoscenze acquisite il modello di business può essere adattato, modificato o addirittura completamente scartato e riprogettato; quest’ultima azione viene definita “pivot” (girare, cambiare direzione). I fondatori di Twitter, ad esempio, inizialmente volevano concentrare il proprio servizio web sui podcast, ma nel corso di un pivot hanno cambiato il modello di business in messaggi brevi con un numero limitato di caratteri. Il successo dell’azienda è ben noto.

Ecco alcune aziende che hanno messo in pratica con successo l’approccio Lean Startup.
Dropbox – Quando il fondatore e CEO dell’azienda di clouding, Drew Houston, ha scoperto il metodo Lean Startup di Eric Ries, la società ha iniziato ad aggiornare il proprio prodotto molto più velocemente per testare le reazioni dei clienti. E grazie ai principi di Lean Startup, in soli 15 mesi Dropbox ha aumentato gli utenti registrati portandoli da 100mila a 4 milioni.
Grockit – Fondata nel 2007 con l’obiettivo di facilitare l’apprendimento sociale, Grockit ha utilizzato i principi Lean Startup per lanciare velocemente sul mercato il proprio prodotto (specifico per la preparazione a test come il LSAT, per l’ammissione alla scuola di Legge Usa), continuando poi a svilupparlo. Mediamente, la piattaforma ospita oggi mille interazioni internazionali e supporta utenti in 150 Paesi
Votizen – Prima piattaforma di lobbismo sociale, Votizen ha cambiato il modo in cui gli elettori si rapportano con i loro politici di riferimento e viceversa. Creato attraverso i principi della Lean Startup, la piattaforma, fondata da David Binetti, è partita come social network di elettori “verificati” per evolversi poi in un sistema di lobbying, e ha portato alla prima legge presentata al Senato USA attraverso un social media.
