Non siamo i nostri beni, ma siamo l’accumulo di tutto ciò che abbiamo visto, delle cose che abbiamo fatto e dei posti in cui siamo stati.
Se avessi dei soldi da spendere ora, in cosa li investiresti? Una nuova tv o una vacanza all’estero? L’ultimo modello di smartphone o un corso per imparare a cucinare?
Abbiamo sempre pensato che i beni materiali fossero la strada per la felicità, ma secondo la scienza a garantirci una felicità duratura sono le esperienze, i viaggi, le attività all’aperto, le nuove abilità.
IL PARADOSSO DEL POSSESSO DEI BENI
Uno studio condotto per 20 anni dal Dr. Thomas Gilovich, professore di psicologia alla Cornell University, ha raggiunto una conclusione certa: non spendere soldi per le cose. Il problema con le cose è che la felicità che forniscono sfuma rapidamente. Ci sono tre ragioni per questo:
- Ci abituiamo ai nuovi oggetti che possediamo. Ciò che prima sembrava nuovo ed eccitante diventa ben presto la normalità.
- Continuiamo ad alzare l’asticella. I nuovi acquisti portano a nuove aspettative. Non appena ci abituiamo al nuovo, cerchiamo qualcosa di meglio.
- Il possesso, per natura, favorisce i confronti. Compriamo una nuova auto e ne siamo entusiasti fino a quando un amico ne acquista una migliore e c’è sempre qualcuno che ne ha una migliore.
“Uno dei nemici della felicità è l’adattamento”, ha detto Gilovich. “Compriamo cose per renderci felici e ci riusciamo. Ma solo per un po’. All’inizio le cose nuove sono eccitanti, ma poi ci adattiamo a loro”.
Il paradosso dei beni materiali è che supponiamo che la felicità ottenuta dall’acquisto di qualcosa duri quanto la cosa stessa. Sembra intuitivo che investire in qualcosa che possiamo vedere, ascoltare e toccare su base permanente fornisca il miglior valore. Ma è sbagliato.
IL GRANDE VALORE DELLE ESPERIENZE
Le esperienze, per quanto fugaci possano essere, offrono felicità più duratura delle cose materiali. Ecco perché:
Le esperienze diventano parte della nostra identità. Non siamo i nostri beni, ma siamo l’accumulo di tutto ciò che abbiamo visto, delle cose che abbiamo fatto e dei posti in cui siamo stati. Comprare un Apple Watch non cambierà chi sei; prendersi una pausa dal lavoro per osservare un tramonto o per visitare una mostra d’arte quasi sicuramente lo farà.
“Puoi davvero apprezzare le tue cose materiali, puoi persino pensare che parte della tua identità sia connessa a quelle cose, ma rimangono comunque separate da te, al contrario, le tue esperienze sono davvero parte di te. Siamo la somma totale delle nostre esperienze”.
I confronti contano poco. Non paragoniamo le esperienze nello stesso modo in cui confrontiamo le cose. In uno studio di Harvard, quando veniva chiesto alle persone se preferivano avere uno stipendio alto ma inferiore a quello dei loro coetanei o uno stipendio basso ma superiore a quello dei coetanei, le risposte erano incerte. Ma quando è stata fatta la stessa domanda sulla durata di una vacanza, la maggior parte delle persone ha scelto una vacanza più lunga, anche se era più breve di quella dei loro coetanei. È difficile quantificare il valore relativo di due esperienze, il che le rende molto più piacevoli.
Le esperienze sono fugaci (che è una buona cosa). Hai mai comprato qualcosa che non era poi così bello come pensavi sarebbe stato? Una volta acquistato, è proprio lì a ricordarti la tua delusione. E anche se un acquisto soddisfa le tue aspettative, il rimorso del compratore può essere questo: “Certo, è bello, ma probabilmente non ne valeva la pena”. Non lo facciamo invece con le esperienze. Il fatto stesso che durino solo per poco tempo fa parte di ciò che ce le fa apprezzare così tanto, e quel valore tende ad aumentare col passare del tempo.
